Invader Tactics Player's Manual

INSTALLATION

The separate file INSTALL has information on installing Invader and its prerequisites.

Windows users:

Unzip the invader-alpha-win32.zip file.

STARTING THE GAME

For now, start SBCL and then at the REPL:

(require :rlx)
(rlx:play "invader")

Windows users:

Just click INVADER.EXE.

THE DISPLAY

Hit points (HP), Oxygen level (OX), and energy (EN) are displayed at the top of the screen. Next comes the map window showing the environment. You are the red diamond in the top left corner.

CONTROLS

For directional control during movement and combat, you can choose between QWERTY and DVORAK layouts as follows:

QWERTY LAYOUT

This is the default and adheres to the classic roguelike movement keymap.

y k u
 \|/
h-.-l
 /|\
b j n

Alt-DIRECTION for melee attack with wrench, Control-DIRECTION to fire with an equipped gun.

DVORAK LAYOUT

To change to DVORAK, add the following to your ~/.rlxrc:

(setf rlx:*user-keyboard-layout* :dvorak)

Then use:

g c r
 \|/
h-.-n
 /|\
m w v

for directional control.

OTHER COMMANDS

Alt-DIRECTION for melee attack with wrench, Control-DIRECTION to fire with an equipped gun (if any). To equip items, press the item's slot number (either 0 or 1). Press 2 (the digit two) to activate any equipped shield. Press Control-Q to quit at any time. Press Control-0 to drop item 0, Control-1 to drop item 1.

GAMEPLAY

You are a human infiltrating an enemy installation populated by psychotic robots. Use both melee attacks, ranged particle weapons, ion shields, and oxygen tanks in a hostile airless environment. The way is always down—try to reach the bottom and eliminate all the robots!

STARTING CONDITIONS

You have 100 hit points, a supply of oxygen and energy, and a rusty wrench. Wrench attack is Alt-DIRECTION.

DEATH

If your oxygen or hit-points reach zero, you die. Movement uses 1 oxygen point per move; melee combat uses more.

WEAPONS

Melee: the Rusty Wrench

Melee combat is effective, but takes up more oxygen than ranged combat or movement.

ITEMS

Med hypo

The medical hypo restores some hit points.

Oxygen tank

Energy tank

Ion shield

TODO Electron bomb

WHERE TO FIND ITEMS

The floor

Crates

Some storage crates contain items. Smash them!

Dead crewmembers

You can recover varying amounts of oxygen, energy, and sometimes medical hypos from the dead crewmembers strewn about the facility.

TODO Wall cabinets

ENEMIES

Berserkers

The blue Berserkers run around looking for the player and will chase you if they get within sight distance.

Biclops

The purple Biclops are more dangerous, and chase the player from longer distances. Until then they hide around corners waiting for you.

Scanners

These yellow-eyed security drones explore the environment searching for you. Once you are detected, they stop and fire heat-seeking particles. Move in close and bash them with the wrench.
